Child and Horror: how to prepare a young actor for filming?
Weight and role: who is who?
The acting profession is not only fame, bouquets and applause. This is, first of all, exhausting work, constant work on yourself and readiness for any changes. Most often, these changes relate to the weight of the actors. Most of them already carefully monitor their appearance, because this is, in a way, one of the working tools that needs to be constantly kept in order.
But suddenly an actor is approved for a role — interesting, promising, with a good fee. There is one catch: you need to lose a lot of weight for filming. And in a short time, because the filming process is about to begin. And then the actor has to make very quick decisions about his own appearance.
Take Matthew McConaughey, for example. He never belonged to the category of overweight people. But in the movie “Dallas Buyers Club” he got a difficult role — a person with AIDS (and among the main symptoms of this terrible disease is a sharp weight loss). Therefore, McConaughey literally had a hard time: he had to lose more than 20 kilograms. The actor chose the most effective way — switched to a low-calorie diet. And even it was reduced to a minimum. To fight hunger attacks, he chewed ice. Constant workouts in the gym were added to the extreme diet. The result was not long in coming: the actor was losing two kilos a week and soon really looked extremely exhausted. But it should be especially noted that McConaughey lost weight under the supervision of a nutritionist. It is dangerous to undertake such “feats" independently.
Actresses Mila Kunis and Natalie Portal had a hard time before filming the art-house thriller “Black Swan". In order to convincingly play a ballerina, both actresses sat on a low-calorie diet and constantly trained (this was also required by the specifics of their roles). Mila Kunis eventually lost 10 kilos, and Natalie Portal — 12.
Actress Anne Hathaway admits that preparing for the role of Fantine in Les Miserables was a real test for her body. She faced a very difficult task — to lose 12 kilos in three weeks. This is a real blow to health, but the acting task required the actress to look really exhausted. Anne Hathaway consumed no more than 500 calories daily, went through several detox programs. She was filmed literally at the limit of her strength and capabilities, because due to a lack of nutrients she experienced constant dizziness.
Linda Hamilton — the famous Sarah Connor from Terminator chose a different way of losing weight. In the first part, she looked, though slender, but round-faced and blooming girl. For the second part, a completely different image was required — a muscular and fit warrior. In order to achieve this effect, Hamilton spent hours in the gym, performing a program designed specifically for her.
It's hard to believe, but actor Christian Bale lost as much as thirty kilograms for filming in the thriller “The Machinist” (2004). According to the plot, he had to look extremely exhausted and coped with this task one hundred percent. For the sake of this, the actor consumed about 300 calories a day for 4 months. His usual diet consisted of a can of tuna and one apple, and sometimes Bays was limited to an apple. In fact, he was starving, and at the same time he was filming, and during breaks he trained in the gym. It's hard to even imagine how dangerous it was for health, but the actor himself found advantages in this. For example, he admitted that he became more calm and restrained so as not to waste energy.
