What should I do in case of a conflict with the director?
A difficult period of downtime
The acting profession has a rather serious disadvantage, which screen and stage professionals know firsthand. It happens that there is a break in a career — short or long, that's how lucky you are. No one is immune from it. Casting directors have forgotten your address and phone number, directors do not invite you to shoot, at best they offer roles like “food is served” in the theater. This is a very difficult situation for an actor, which can lead to despair. Even if we leave aside the material aspect of the problem (we live in a material world and it will not work to ignore money), the actor is experiencing mental anguish due to the inability to do what he loves, creativity. If the period of downtime is delayed, then thoughts about professional suitability, about their own uselessness may appear. What should be done in this case?
Ending self—blame is only half the battle. It is extremely important for an actor in such a situation to analyze the state of affairs. Is he doing everything to promote himself in the world of cinema? Are all social tools involved — personal connections, social networks? How often does he go to auditions and how does he present himself? Is the resume and video card in order? You can ask more experienced colleagues to point out possible mistakes, due to which invitations to shoot are not received.
If all this has already been done, and there is still no result, it remains to change the attitude to what is happening. This does not mean to resign yourself and give up on a career. But everyone should be aware that not everything in this world depends only on us and our efforts. It happens that the obstacle at the moment is insurmountable and it is necessary to wait for some time. The situation can change at any moment: new projects will appear, your profile will interest the director, etc. But in anticipation of a happy chance, it is extremely inconsiderate to just sit idly by. You should devote this time to self-development, self-education, pumping existing skills and acquiring new skills. Nowadays there are so many opportunities that, rather, there is not enough time to at least try the most interesting. Remember that every skill you acquire automatically increases your value as an actor. Whether you master a new craft, take up sports and improve your appearance, learn a foreign language or the texts of new roles — everything can be useful to you later in the filming process.
And what to do with the notorious material aspect? There are no roles — there is no money, and you need to live on something. There are also many options for the actor to apply efforts here. Try to work in the theater — even if not the most famous. Filming episodes used to help out many young actors. Work in advertising, in the modeling business, in teaching (acting courses), and finally, work as an animator — all these options, although they do not fully meet ambitious aspirations, but they will definitely help you hold on to that most cherished role that will take you to the top of success.
